Curly Hair Extensions Have Landed

Curly Hair Deserves Its Own Approach

You've been asking for curly hair extensions for a while now, and our answer has always been "not yet, we're not quite ready." That wait is over. We're excited to talk you through how we match real hair extensions to your exact curl pattern, so the result actually looks like your hair.

If you remember our straight hair extensions launch, you'll know this isn't something we rush. Every new service goes through proper training before it reaches you in the chair. Curly hair extensions work differently to straight ones, and we wanted to be confident in the process before offering them to you.

Why extensions for curly hair are different

Getting the colour right is more or less the whole task with straight hair extensions. Curly hair extensions ask a lot more of us. Colour is still part of it, but matching the curl itself matters just as much, and no two heads of curls behave the same way. Some clients have a tight coil, others a looser wave, and most people have several textures happening at once across their head.

Instead of fitting one standard curl pattern and hoping it blends, we build each order from a mix of textures that mirrors how curls naturally fall across your head. It's a slightly slower way of working, but it's what stops extensions from looking like something just bolted on.

The curly hair extensions process

  1. We start with a consultation. You'll talk us through your goals, your current colour and how your curls behave. This is where we figure out what you actually need, not just what you think you want.

  2. Colour is matched once your colouring is done, not before. This step tends to trip a lot of people up. Any colouring needs to happen first, because the extensions are ordered to match the colour you end up with. We don't colour the extensions to fit you afterwards.
If your hair is uncoloured, we simply match to your natural shade, which saves you a step.

  3. Your hair is ordered specifically for you. Once your colour and curl pattern are confirmed, we place your order to those exact specifications. Expect roughly three to seven days for it to arrive, sometimes a little longer for custom lengths or colours.

Can I colour my hair once I have curly hair extensions?

A root tint is fine with extensions already in. If your roots need topping up down the line, you won't need to take the extensions out first. Highlights are a different matter though, those do require the extensions to come out.

The reason comes down to how the match was made in the first place. Your extensions are matched to your hair colour at a specific point in time, and that match holds as long as your colour stays close to it. A root tint doesn't shift your overall tone enough to break that match. Highlights change both tone and pattern significantly, so to keep things looking consistent, we take the extensions out, do the highlights, then check the match again before putting the curly hair extensions back in.

If highlights are already part of your routine, it's worth talking about this at your consultation. We can plan removal and refitting around your usual colour schedule instead of it being a surprise later.

Why we took our time sourcing the hair

Sourcing curly hair well is genuinely harder than sourcing straight real hair extensions. Many suppliers shortcut this by perming straight hair into a curl shape, but it never quite moves or holds like real curls do. We wanted the real thing, so we partnered with Gold Class Hair, whose curly range comes entirely from donors with naturally wavy or curly hair, sourced ethically and available up to a 3c curl pattern. That range is what lets us match your curl properly rather than settling for close enough.

The results speak for themselves. Gold Class extensions have been worn by names like Rochelle Humes, Sophie Piper and Maya Jama, so you're getting the same calibre of hair now landing in Hong Kong.

Are curly hair extensions reusable or one and done?

Not every method works the same way, so it's worth knowing the difference before you decide.

Pre-bonded extensions need the least day-to-day upkeep and usually last up to four months, but they're single use. Once removed, they can't go back in.

Hand-tied wefts can be taken out, refitted and reused, provided they're looked after properly.

Micro ring extensions are also reusable. They're moved up roughly every six to eight weeks as your natural hair grows, and the same hair goes back in each time.

We'll talk you through which method fits your hair, your lifestyle and your budget at your consultation, including what that means for reuse and cost over time. There isn't one right answer, it depends on what you're after. That's why we don't treat extensions for curly hair as a one-size-fits-all service.

Textured hair extensions call for specialist skill

Extensions for textured hair are only ever as good as the person fitting and maintaining them. Whether you're working with a loose wave or a tight coil, whoever fits your textured hair extensions needs to understand how that particular pattern moves, dries and settles day to day, not just how it looks the moment you leave the chair. Curls behave very differently to straight hair, and ongoing care matters more here than it does with straight extensions.

Getting the initial match right only pays off if the care in between appointments keeps up with it. Our stylists will walk you through how to look after your extensions so they keep performing. Book your free consultation here.

Frequently asked curly hair extensions questions

Who looks after curly hair extensions at Love Hair Hong Kong?

Dom and Natasha handle it from start to finish, so the same specialist who cuts and colours your curls is the one fitting and maintaining your extensions.

Will I need to take my extensions out to colour my hair?

A root tint is fine with extensions in. Highlights change your tone more significantly, so those do need the extensions removed first.

How long does it take to get curly hair extensions fitted?

After your consultation, your hair is ordered specifically for you. It usually takes three to seven days to arrive, sometimes a little longer for custom lengths or colours.

Can curly hair extensions be reused?

It depends on the method. Pre-bonded extensions are single use, while hand-tied wefts and micro ring extensions can be taken out, refitted and used again.

Why can't just any stylist fit curly hair extensions?

Curl patterns move, dry and settle differently to straight hair, so whoever fits them needs to understand your specific texture, not just how it looks on the day.
